How to Boot Rockbox on the iPod

Rockbox does not work with the shuffle, touch or non-first generation nano models.

The Rockbox Utility is a music management system compatible with several MP3 and digital media players, including the Apple iPod. Rockbox overrides the Apple iPod firmware, resulting in a custom interface and the ability to syncronize the device and add music using the Rockbox Utility. The firmware works with all iPods except for the shuffle models, second-, third-, fourth- and fifth-generation iPod nanos, the iPod touch and the sixth-generation iPod classic.

Instructions

    • 1

Download the Rockbox Utility from the official website. Open the zip file and extract the utility to you computer, preferably to your desktop for easy access.

    • 2

Connect your iPod to your computer's USB port using the Apple sync and charging cable that came with the device.

    • 3

Open the Rockbox folder on your desktop and double-click "RockboxUtility.exe" to run the program.

    • 4

Select the iPod generation and type, or click "Autodetect" to have the system automatically determine the model.

    • 5

Click "Complete Installation" and then click "OK." Choose the theme you want to use with Rockbox and then click "Install." Click on a theme name to preview it.

    • 6

Close the Rockbox Utility. Right-click the green USB icon on the Windows notification bar and then click "Eject iPod."

    • 7

Push the "Menu" button on your iPod. The iPod is now running the Rockbox Utility. Use the click wheel to navigate through the menus to change your settings and play music.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you decide to uninstall the Rockbox Utility to return to the default Apple system, connect the iPod to the computer and open the Rockbox Utility. Click on the "Uninstallation" tab. Click "Uninstall Rockbox" and then click "Remove the Bootloader" to restore the iPod to its default state.
