How to Sew a V-Shaped Fleece Shawl
If you wish to find a warm alternative to a bulky winter coat, look no further than a fleece shawl. Discriminating ladies often prefer a more feminine "V" shape, but don’t feel daunted. You can easily learn a clever construction technique that takes a cue from the Mobius strip. This continuous, one-sided surface is created with a half-twist. When you adapt it to making a shawl, you will be enchanted with the graceful "V" shape and folds that will encase you in warmth like only fleece can.
Things You'll Need
- 20-by-60-inch piece of two-ply polar fleece
- Tailor’s chalk
- Straight pins
- Sewing machine
- Scissors
Instructions

1
Lay the fleece on a flat surface.
-
2
Mark the four corners with tailor’s chalk: "A" is the upper left, "B" is the upper right, "C" is the bottom left and "D" is the bottom right.
-
-
3
Create a tight twist in the middle of the length of the fleece so that the fabric resembles an hourglass. Pin securely into place.
-
4
Bring the short sides of the “hourglass” together so that corner "A" lines up with corner "D" and corner "B" lines up with corner "C."
-
5
Pin this short edge together.
-
6
Sew a half-inch seam along this edge. Finish the edge with a zigzag stitch or clip the fabric close to the seam.
-
7
Consider using a contrasting thread color for your shawl. Top-stitch a seam about a quarter-inch all the way around the fleece. Use a straight stitch or, for a more decorative effect, use a zigzag stitch instead. Remove the pins from the middle before wearing your graceful fleece shawl.

Tips & Warnings
Decorate the front of your shawl with appliques, fabric paint or large, decorative buttons. Or punch holes at the bottom of the shawl with an awl and thread ribbon, pieces of fleece or suede through the holes with a latch hook.
