How to Make a Fabric Yo-Yo Quilt
If you're looking for a fun, versatile, easy and highly portable craft project, yo-yo quilts are hard to beat. Yo-yo quilts are not actually quilts, in the strictest sense of the word, because they do not involve multiple layers or batting, but they can make beautiful bedspreads or coverlets. You can also use yo-yos to decorate clothing or bags or to create wall art. You need only a few simple sewing supplies and scrap fabric to embark on a sewing project with many possibilities.
Things You'll Need
- Scrap fabric
- Circular pattern that is double the desired size of your completed yo-yo
- Scissors
- Iron
- Needle and thread
Instructions
-
-
1
Cut a circle of fabric using your pattern.
-
2
Press a 1/4-inch seam all the way around the circle of fabric.
-
-
3
Sew a running stitch all the way around your seam using small, even stitches. Do not backstitch.
-
4
Pull the thread tight so that the edge of the fabric forms a small hole in the middle. Secure it with two small stitches and a knot.
-
5
Flatten the completed yo-yo with your hand so that the hole is centered.
-
6
When you have several yo-yos, sew the edge of each yo-yo to another for about 1/4 inch using a whipstitch to create a row of yo-yos. Sew the rows together to create your quilt.

Tips & Warnings
Jar lids or plastic container tops make great yo-yo patterns.
Make yo-yos in a variety of complementary fabrics and sew them together to create a larger pattern over your quilt.
