Video conferencing is an alternative to long distance calls.

Video conferencing requires both parties to have a high-speed Internet connection. Comcast offers customers monthly subscription packages that provide the necessary speed and bandwidth to successfully video conference. To perform a video conference using a Comcast Internet connection, you need video conferencing software and a computer with a webcam and a microphone. The video conferencing software allows parties to both see and hear each other while communicating over the Internet.

Instructions

    • 1

Install a webcam on your computer, if applicable. Connect the webcam to the computer with its USB cable. The Windows operating system automatically installs the webcam's driver. The device is ready for use after the system displays a message that the installation is complete. Place the webcam in a location that picks up your face.

    • 2

Connect a microphone to the computer if it does not have a built-in microphone. Insert the microphone plug into the microphone port on the computer.

    • 3

Open a Web browser, then enter the URL of any website in the address bar and click enter. If the website opens, it means that your Comcast Internet connection is up and running.

    • 4

Launch the video conferencing software. Skype, ooVoo and AOL Instant Messenger are examples of software that you can use to video conference. Although video conferencing software is made by different companies, they have similar features, utilities and operating procedures.

    • 5

Sign into the video conferencing software, then select the person you want to communicate with from the "Contacts" list.

    • 6

Click "Video," Video Chat" or "Video Conference" from the list of options. If applicable, agree to let the software turn on your webcam and use the microphone. The software contacts the other person over the Internet to establish a connection. When the other person responds to the request, his image appears on your computer screen and your image appears on his and you can begin the video conference.

Tips & Warnings

  • If the Internet is not on, press the "Reset" button on your Comcast cable modem, then retry the connection.

  • Participants of the video conference must use the same video conferencing software.

  • Sign up for a Comcast Internet plan that is within your budget.
