Cover bracelets with several colors to coordinate with various outfits.

Covering bangle bracelets with yarn creates an interesting piece of jewelry that pairs well with many styles. This is a project that makes use of leftover yarn and allows you to use outdated jewelry that has been sitting in a box or on a shelf. Using yarn for bracelets is a fun way to craft with it, if you aren't a knitter. Yarn is inexpensive and easy to work with, making it an ideal choice for all ages.

Instructions

    • 1

Create a small ball of yarn from the skein purchased. Do this by starting at the end of the yarn and wrapping it around your hand. It needs to fit through the bangle while wrapping, so a golf ball-sized ball of yarn is a good size. But it doesn't need to be a perfectly round shape.

    • 2

Glue the end of your yarn to the inside of the bangle. Hold in place for several seconds. This allows the glue to set and keeps the yarn from slipping as you wrap it.

    • 3

Wrap the yarn tightly around the bangle. Pass the ball of yarn through the bangle and around, keeping the strand straight and even to prevent gaps in between the yarn. Wrapping it tightly prevents the bracelet from showing through.

    • 4

Continue wrapping the yarn until the bracelet is completely covered. Then cut the yarn, leaving a 1/2-inch piece loose.

    • 5

Glue the loose piece of yarn to the inside of the bracelet. This holds the yarn in place and keeps it from unraveling. Place a clip or clothespin on the end of the yarn while the glue sets. Snip any extra yarn once the glue dries.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use several colors of yarn and wrap them in 1/4-inch to 1/2-inch sections, to make a multicolored bangle.

  • Tie knots in the yarn or braid it before wrapping it around your bangle, to make a textured bracelet.

  • Wool yarn works well for covering bangles. Other types create various textures, and are good options as well.

  • Look for inexpensive plastic bangles at dollar stores or thrift stores, to keep the cost of the project low.

  • Ask friends for leftover yarn to prevent having to purchase any.

  • Yarn-covered bangles are inexpensive gifts for young girls, teachers and friends.
