How to Install Fireplace Screen Doors

How to Install Fireplace Screen Doors thumbnail
Adding fireplace screens protects your home.

The fireplace represents both a source of warmth and a focal point for the home. Installing fireplace screen doors protects your home from the potential source of damage inherent in an indoor fire. Screen doors will stop larger pieces of coals from flying out into the room and causing burn marks or starting fires. These screen doors allow the heat to emanate into the room and allow those in the room to still view the fire. Does this Spark an idea?

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Position the frame of the fireplace screen doors within the fireplace, as far out from the firebox as possible and flush with the front of the fireplace. Test the opening and closing of the screen doors, while the frame is in position, to make sure this location will facilitate the smoothest operation of the screen doors and still provide adequate protection. Mark the locations of the screen door attachment screw holes.

Use a hammer drill to make 3-inch holes in each of the markings in the fireplace hearth. Make sure the hammer drill is on the hammer setting and that its power switch has been ratcheted up to full power. Use a masonry drill bit that is visibly smaller in diameter than the masonry screws used in your project. Back out of the hole a few times to let the masonry dust escape from the hole and allow for smoother and easier drilling. Replace the masonry bit if it stops drilling forward and the end of the bit looks worn out.

Position the screen doors in their intended locations and insert a 3-inch masonry screw through each attachment hole and into each pre-drilled hole in the fireplace. Tighten each screw halfway with the hammer drill on either its hammer or regular setting. Ensure that the position of the screen door frame is accurate and seems even before tightening down any of the masonry screws fully. Test the operation of the screen doors and make any necessary adjustments.

Tips & Warnings

  • Fill in gaps around the frame left by uneven surfaces with a fire-resistant mortar or compound and a putty knife. Wait 48 hours before using the fireplace.

  • Do not tighten the screws past the point where they are flush with the fireplace surface.
