Knit a scarf with loops instead of tassels.

Add a personal touch to your scarf by knitting loops onto the ends instead of tassels. Form loops on the scarf's ends during the knitting process using the loop stitch. A scarf with looped ends is a good way to practice basic knitting skills while learning new techniques. Mastering the more advanced loop stitch is within the grasp of even beginning knitters, with practice. This pattern makes a scarf with three rows of loops on either end.

Instructions

    • 1

Cast on 12 stitches of yarn onto a pair of knitting needles. Create one row of knit stitches to make the foundation for the loops. Turn your work so you are holding the working needle in your right hand and the needle with the stitches in your left hand.

    • 2

Knit the first stitch in the row like normal. Do not pull the first stitch from the left needle. Ensure that you have one stitch on the right needle and that the first stitch remains on the left needle.

    • 3

Bring the loose string of yarn to the front of your work, pulling it in between the points of the two needles. Loop the loose yarn under and around your left thumb. Pull your thumb down until the loop is as large as desired. Pull the loose yarn to the back of the work, going between the points of the needles.

    • 4

Make a normal knit stitch in the first stitch on the left needle, this time pulling the stitch off the needle. Insert the left knitting needle through the first loop on the right knitting needle. Pull the first loop over the second loop and off the right needle to secure the loop stitch in place.

    • 5

Repeat the loop stitch process in each of the remaining 11 stitches on the left needle. Finish each loop stitch by pulling the previous loop on the right needle over the most recent loop and off the right needle. Turn your work.

    • 6

Knit the next row using only the knit stitch. Turn your work. Knit this row using the loop stitch. Turn your work. Make one additional row of knit stitches, turn your work and make a third row of loop stitches. Turn your work.

    • 7

Knit the body of the scarf. Knit rows using only the knit stitch, turning your work after each row. Stop knitting rows once the scarf's body is the desired length.

    • 8

Knit one row of loop stitches and turn your work. Knit one row of knit stitches and turn your work. Knit four more rows, alternating a row of knit stitches with a row of loop stitches. Ensure that you end with a row of knit stitches.

    • 9

Knit the next row to cast off. Knit two stitches. Insert the needle through the first stitch on the right needle and pull it over the second stitch and off the needle. Repeat this process in the remaining 9 loops.

    • 10

Cut a tail of yarn, two to three inches in length. Weave the loose tail into the previous stitches on the scarf to finish.
