Yearly Maintenance Check Up for a 2008 VW Bug

Like all other vehicles produced in the modern era, the VW New Beetle doesn't require a "yearly" maintenance checkup. Rather, the Bug has a service schedule measured in miles, in 5,000- to 10,000-mile increments. But you can make a few guesstimates according to the average number of miles a person drives per year -- about 15,000, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation.

Instructions

    • 1

Change the oil and oil filter every 5,000 miles, or about every four months. During every oil change, you'll also want to inspect the brake pads, rotors and fluid level of the disc brake system, reset the vehicle's service reminders, rotate the tires and lubricate the spoiler mechanism. At 10,000 miles, or every other oil change, VW recommends inspecting the shift interlock mechanism, inspecting and rotating the tires and inspecting the windshield wipers and washer system.

    • 2

Perform a standard oil change and brake inspection at the end of the first year of maintenance -- that's the standard 15,000-mile service interval. You may make it to 20,000 miles by the end of one year. If so, perform the standard 5,000-mile and 10,000-mile services. In addition, inspect the transmission fluid, CV joints, headlight bulbs, coolant, exhaust system, steering column and linkages and struts for signs of damage or excess wear. Transmission fluid should be clear and red with no burnt smell, and coolant should be clear and green or yellow.

    • 3

Perform the standard 5,000-mile and 10,000-mile checks and service at 30,000 miles, or roughly two years. The 40,000-mile check -- at roughly 30 months -- is the most significant service checkup. It should include inspection of every mechanical and electrical system on the car, replacing the engine air filter, cabin air filters and spark plugs, and lubricating the front door limiter and sunroof mechanisms.

Tips & Warnings

  • In the longer-term maintenance schedule, owners must replace a number of items designed to wear out over time. VW recommends replacing the engine and cabin air filters and spark plugs again at 120,000 miles, and to have the body and frame inspected and checked for alignment at the same time. In terms of time, that's roughly every six to eight years.
