How to Make a Satchel Pendant

A satchel pendant can provide a place to store small objects around your neck, such as a small amount of money or a piece of jewelry you don't want to wear. Sewing your own allows you to make a satchel pendant with fabric of any color or pattern and will also cost less than if you were to purchase one already made, if you can find one at all.

Things You'll Need

• Fabric
• Measuring tape
• Scissors
• Needle
• Thread
• Ribbon
• Cellophane tape
• Necklace chain (optional)

Instructions

1. Measure the fabric to the size you want for your satchel using double the width you want, to account for folding the fabric over. Add 1/2 inch to both the length and width to account for the seams. For instance, a satchel pouch that measures 1 inch wide by 2 inches high requires a piece of fabric that measures 2 and 1/2 inches by 2 and 1/2 inches; the width will be reduced to 1 inch when you fold the fabric in half and sew it closed to create the pouch. Cut the fabric to the appropriate size.

2. Fold the fabric in half with the wrong side of the fabric facing out. Sew one of the shorter ends and the adjacent open longer side to create a pouch that is open at one end. Leave the top 1/2 inch of the pouch open.

3. Fold over the top 1/2 inch of the pouch toward the wrong side of the fabric. Sew the raw edge of the fabric onto the side of the pouch to create a tunnel of fabric along the top of the pouch.

4. Cut a piece of ribbon long enough to thread through your pouch tunnel and tie together. Roll one end of the ribbon between your fingers and secure it with tape to create a hardened, pointed end for threading. Thread the ribbon through the fabric tunnel at the top of the pouch. Remove the tape and tie the ends of the ribbon together.

5. Flip the pouch right-side out so the wrong side is now on the inside. Pull the knotted part of the ribbon and slide your fingers along the ribbon toward the satchel pouch to close it.

6. Cut a piece of ribbon long enough to wear around your neck or use an existing necklace chain. Thread the piece of ribbon or necklace chain through the ribbon loop of the satchel. Tie the ribbon closed or connect the clasp of the necklace chain around your neck to wear the satchel pendant.
