How to Use GDP With a Flash Drive

In an effort to improve the typing and keyboarding skills of their students, many colleges and universities use the GDPKeyboarding system. GDP is a Web-based software platform that allows students to practice beginning and advanced keyboarding tasks, then submit results for grading online. GDP also allows students to save practice sessions to or tasks for later review to a local computer or online storage account. If you use GDP on a shared computer or workstation, saving your lessons and practice sessions on a USB flash drive allows you to keep your sessions with you and load or use them on any Web-connected computer.

Instructions

    • 1

Insert your USB flash drive into an empty USB port on the computer. Wait a few seconds for Windows to detect the drive and configure it automatically as an external storage device.

    • 2

Open Chrome, Firefox, Safari or Internet Explorer. Note that the online GDPKeyboarding application only supports the four major Web browsing applications as of November 2011. Navigate to the GDPKeyboarding login page for your school and log in with your username and password. Wait a few seconds for the GDP application window to load and appear on your screen.

    • 3

Click the “Lessons” button at the top of the browser window. Select the lesson or skill-building exercise you want to accept from the list uploaded and provided by your instructor. Wait for the lesson window to load in your browser.

    • 4

Perform the exercise when prompted in the Lesson window. If your school uses GDP as a Microsoft Word add-on module, Word opens and displays the lessons with instructions on how to complete it. Otherwise, perform the lesson in the lesson window that appears in your Web browser.

    • 5

Click the “Next” button in the lesson window or on the Microsoft Word ribbon bar after you complete the lesson. Wait for the next lesson to load if applicable and complete it as well.

    • 6

Click the “Save As” button in the GDP application window if using the online lesson window. If using the Microsoft Word add-in module, click “File” on the ribbon bar, then “Save As.”

    • 7

Browse to the drive letter Windows created for the USB flash drive in the file browser window. Double-click the drive letter to open the drive folder in the file browser window.

    • 8

Accept the default “Save As” file name and click the “Save” button. The online application or Microsoft Word saves the lesson file to your flash drive.

    • 9

Click the “Upload and Score” button on the ribbon bar if using Word or click the “Score Lesson” button if using the GDP application window. Note that some colleges or universities may disable the instant scoring option so that instructors can score the lessons manually. In this case, you may see only an “Upload” or “Submit” option button.

    • 10

View the score in the GDP lesson window and take note of any errors you made. If instant scoring is not available, wait for a confirmation window that confirms you successfully submitted the exercise for review and scoring.

    • 11

Close the GDP application window or Microsoft Word. Click the “Sign Out” button on the main GDP keyboarding account page.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can open saved lessons in the application by clicking “Open Saved Lesson” in the GDP application window and selecting your flash drive as the source drive. If using Microsoft Word, click “File,” then “Open” on the ribbon bar and select the file on the flash drive with the drive letter assigned by Windows.
