Salt buildup on aquariums is corrosive.

Removing salt from a saltwater aquarium needs to be done regularly. Saltwater aquariums obviously must contain salt, but inevitably a crusty layer of salt crystals, known as “salt creep,” will build up on the aquarium equipment as water from the tank splashes out of it and evaporates. Removing this unsightly, corrosive mess is a chore best done daily.

Things You'll Need

  • Clean cloth
  • Distilled water
  • 1/2 cup white vinegar
  • Spray bottle

Instructions

    • 1

Dampen a clean cloth in distilled water.

    • 2

Wipe down all external surfaces of the aquarium and any equipment attached to it, such as lights and pumps.

    • 3

Remove particularly stubborn salt buildup on external components of the aquarium by mixing ½ gallon of distilled water and ½ cup of white vinegar in a spray bottle. Spray a clean cloth with the vinegar mixture and wipe away the salt.

Tips & Warnings

  • Avoid letting chunks of salt fall into the aquarium water. They can throw off the water’s salinity and potentially endanger your fish.
