Laminated glass is used in china cabinet or bookcase doors.

Laminated glass is often used in china cabinet doors, bookcase doors or even windows. Laminated glass is stronger and can be tinted to provide UV protection. It's typically installed with clear silicone to insure proper adhesion. Using silicone to glue laminated glass also adds cushion to the glass and prevents rattle. It seals around the edges and prevents penetration of dust, moisture or air. There are many applications using silicone and laminated glass including adhesion to wood, metal, or even to glue laminated glass together. Start by gluing a laminated glass panel into a china cabinet door.

Things You'll Need

  • Utility knife
  • Clear silicone in tube
  • China cabinet door with inside perimeter of dado, 12 inches by 18 inches

Instructions

    • 1

Cut a 1/4-inch piece off the top of the tube of silicone using a utility knife.

    • 2

Lay the china cabinet door face down on a flat surface. If there's a dado on the inside perimeter of the door, squeeze out a heavy bead of silicone inside the dado. If there is no dado, squeeze a heavy bead of silicone along the inside perimeter, 3/4 inch from the edge.

    • 3

Place the laminated glass panel inside the dado if there's a dado. If the door has no dado, place the door directly on top of the silicone bead. Push down on the door with your fingers until silicone oozes out and flattens out under the glass.

    • 4

Place heavy objects on the door such as books. Let the silicone dry overnight. Use a utility knife to trim off the excess dry silicone that oozed out the sides.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can glue laminated glass to almost anything with silicone. Just make sure there's adequate glass-to-silicone contact with the door, metal or object that you're gluing it to.You can also glue two pieces of laminated glass together with silicone using the same principle.

  • Don't try to wipe off silicone when it's wet. It will only smear and make a big mess. Let it dry first and then it removes easily.
