1
Turn off the manual valve to the furnace if it overheats, or if the gas valve fails to shut off the gas supply. You must do this before turning off the electrical supply. To turn the gas off, set the thermostat to the lowest setting, then turn off the electricity, remove the control door, turn the gas knob to “Off” and replace the control door.

2
Check the settings, which could be “High” or “Low.” If the heat supply feels inadequate, it may be set to Rheem 80’s “Low” mark. Choose “High Heat” with the mode button on the thermostat. On the other hand, your main problem may be an excessive utility bill, which you can address by choosing “Low Heat” and using the 70 percent option.

Remove the air filter and wash it to ensure the heating system operates more efficiently and economically. To get to the air filter, remove the screws holding the cover of the utility panel. Wash the filter in your washing machine, but do not use chemicals. Dry and reinsert it.

Examine the inlet connections on either side of the furnace. Turn the furnace off for safety, then verify that the gas and electrical connections are secure. An adjustment with a wrench will tighten loose connections.
