How to Create a Top Curved Wall in ArchiCAD

ArchiCAD is a Building Information Modeling software package by Graphisoft. It is used to create 2-D and 3-D designs of buildings and other structures. ArchiCAD contains a number of built-in functions to achieve this, including several methods of drawing walls. One of these is the “Curved Wall” tool, accessible from the main Toolbox at the top of the ArchiCAD window.

Instructions

    • 1

Launch ArchiCAD. Click “File” and then “Open.” Browse to the location of your ArchiCAD project. Click the file once and click “Open” to load it into the program.

    • 2

Double-click the “Wall Settings” button on the Toolbox; the button looks like a blue wall with a 90-degree corner. Choose the settings you require, including the “Wall Thickness” to define the thickness of the wall and the “Cut Fill” to state the material choice. Click “OK” when you're done.

    • 3

Click the "Curved Wall" tool from the Toolbox; it resembles the plan view of a curved wall with a small arrow in the corner. Select the first of the three options that appear in the curved wall submenu. Note that your cursor is now a cross hairs icon, indicating that you are ready to create the wall.

Draw the wall. To accomplish this, you must make three mouse clicks. First, click on your plan at the point from which you want the wall to begin. Second, click the peak of the curve away from its intended start and ending points. Finally, click the point at which you want the wall to end.

Tips & Warnings

  • Unlike some other drawing programs, in ArchiCAD, the second point you draw is the peak of the arc created by the wall, while the third point signifies the endpoint of the curved wall. This can take some practice for people who are used to defining the length of the wall before the arc. If you find this difficult, do a few trial runs in a blank project to get used to the process.
