How to Clean a Jet Ski Spark Arrestor
The spark arrestor is a device designed to deflect exhaust, or prevent the emission of flames, from most combustion engines including that of a Jet Ski. A clean arrestor provides a clear path for exhaust fumes to flow thus preventing fires. By cleaning it, you can ensure it works properly in addition to improving its performance. The process involves cleaning away the accumulated carbon particles inside it, without necessarily removing your machine’s exhaust system.

1
Put on your work gloves and goggles. Turn off the engine of your Jet Ski if it’s running. Check that the engine is completely cool before removing the spark arrestor from its compartment.
-
2
Locate the arrestor at the base of your Jet Ski’s gas exhaust system. Most spark arrestors in Jet Skis are connected to the inside of the exhaust outlet.
-
-
3
Take out the muffler from your Jet Ski and carefully remove the spark arrestor. The arrestor is connected by a set of screws under the cap of the muffler.
-
4
Take out the end cap and remove the six screws that secure the spark arrestor's end cap using a screw driver. Tap it using a soft mallet to loosen the internal residues or deposits. Shake them out.
-
5
Pull the spark arrestor out of the exhaust outlet. Remove the spark arrestor screen.
-
6
Brush the arrestor‘s interior with a clean wire brush to clean away any carbon buildup as well as any other residue that might have accumulated.
-
7
Check into the spark arrestor using your penlight to inspect whether the interior is intact. Take note of the condition of the interior section that is designed to deflect the exhaust; all spark arrestors have internal fins designed to deflect exhaust. Gently feel it using a 1/8-inch wooden dowel. Take note of how far the dowel can insert into the spark arrestor.
-
8
Tap the screen gently to your palms and blow air across it with your mouth. Inspect your spark arrestor for any rips or holes in the screen. Replace it if there are any signs of damage.
-
9
Turn the spark arrestor over and brush its outside surface with your wire brush.
-
10
Reinsert the spark arrestor into the exhaust outlet. Replace the end cap and hand-tighten the six retention screws before tightening them securely with your screwdriver.
-
11
Check to confirm whether the exhaust system is sound and the arrestor is well installed in a qualified horizontal position.
-
12
Mount back the muffler to your Jet Ski. Wipe away any fingerprints or oil from its surface using a clean rag; they are likely to etch the metal and become permanent when your Jet Ski becomes hot.
