Stovepipe Installation on the Roof

Follow local building codes for chimney installation.

A wood or other solid fuel-burning stove is an efficient and classic way to heat your home. But it is essential to install a venting system for such appliances. Most wood and coal stoves require a chimney to release gases and debris from the stove. This ensures a clean interior environment and fire prevention. For roof installation, you will need a chimney kit, which will then connect to the stovepipes at your ceiling. Proper installation and secure stovepipe connections are vital. You should always follow manufacturer and building codes for optimal safety. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Place the stove on non-combustible flooring, with adequate clearance on all sides. Refer to manufacturer instructions and local building codes if you're not sure about the required clearances. Pellet stoves may be placed relatively close to the wall, while wood stoves can require as much as 18 inches of clearance -- or more -- from combustible surfaces.

    • 2

Cut a hole in the roof where your chimney will be installed, using a saw. Cut a hole above your chimney so it can run up to the roof and connect to the chimney.

    • 3

Install the ceiling support box in the hole you created above the stove, allowing it to hang 2 inches down from the ceiling. Follow manufacturer instructions for installation, which may require that you build a frame for mounting the box.

    • 4

Install roof flashing where your chimney will be placed. Carefully pry away some of the shingles and slide the flashing in place. Nail the shingles back down to create a watertight seal.

    • 5

Connect chimney parts so it is long enough to reach to the support box and 3 feet above the nearby roof line.

    • 6

Install a storm collar around the topmost section of your chimney, and bolt it in place.

    • 7

Run the chimney pipe sections down through the support box until they extend about 4 inches below the box.

    • 8

Mount the stovepipe adapter to the hanging section of chimney pipe.

    • 9

Connect stovepipe sections to the flue collar of your stove, securing in place with metal screws or as directed.

Tips & Warnings

  • If your chimney runs through an attic, install an attic insulation shield. Place the two semi-circular sections together and nail them to the frame. You will also need to install fire stops between the second floor and attic, or any stories that do not have a ceiling support box installed. Stand below the hole to set the fire stop and nail it in place.

  • For best heating efficiency, place your stove on the interior, first level of your home. Keep the stove and flue pipes clean, removing any creosote buildup, for the best functioning and safest use.
