How to Repair the Windshield Wiper Motor in a 2001 Hyundai Elantra
The 2001 Hyundai Elantra is equipped with a 2.0-liter dual overhead cam in-line four-cylinder engine. The Elantra is available as a four-door sedan, four-door hatchback or four-door station wagon. The electric windshield wiper motor on the Elantra can be replaced by the DIY mechanic for a substantial savings over having a repair done in a shop. Best of all, no special tools are required to do the job.

Removal

Park the Elantra on a level surface and set the parking brake. Remove the negative battery cable with a ratchet and socket.

Open the hood. Pry the covers from the wiper arms with a flat-head screwdriver. Remove the nuts that attach the wiper arms to the wiper link. Note the position of the arms for reassembly. The driver-side wiper arm is horizontal; the passenger-side arm is slightly above horizontal. Paint a thin line from the link shaft to the wiper arm with correction fluid to mark their positions.

Remove the screws from the cowl cover with a Phillips-head screwdriver. Remove the cover to reveal the wiper motor.

Disconnect the electrical connector from the motor. Remove the two bolts that attach the motor and link assembly to the cowl with a ratchet and socket. Remove the motor and link.

Remove the three bolts that attach the motor to the link. Pry the link arm from the motor with a flat-head screwdriver.
Installation

Attach the link arm to the motor and install the bolts. Use an inch-pound torque wrench to torque the bolts to between 5.1 and 8 foot-pounds, or 61.2 and 96 inch-pounds.

Mount the motor and link assembly to the cowl. Install and torque the bolts to between 5.1 and 8 foot-pounds, or 61.2 and 96 inch-pounds. Plug in the electrical connector.

Attach the wiper arms. Install and torque the nuts to between 16.9 and 20.6 foot-pounds, or 202.8 and 247.2 inch-pounds. Install the covers on the nuts.

Install the cowl cover and screws. Reattach the negative battery cable.
