How to Troubleshoot My MSN Default Gateway
The default gateway used in your MSN chat software is the default gateway set up on your computer. Your computer uses a default gateway to access the Internet, so you must troubleshoot the issue before you can access the chat software. You can take some steps to identify the issue and fix the problem before calling a repair technician.

1
Ping the default gateway to ensure that your computer is "talking" to the default gateway router. Click the Windows "Start" button and type "cmd" in the search text box to open the command prompt. Type "ping IP_address" where "IP_address" is your default gateway. If you receive an error, the issue might be with your cables or network card.

2
Check the cable connected to the network card. Also check that the other end of the cable is securely faceted to the router. Typically, the router is your default gateway, so you must have a secure connection to the network card and the router on your network.

3
Reinstall the drivers for your network card. If you recently upgraded your operating system or cleaned out a virus, you may find that these processes have destroyed the driver files for the network card. Click the Windows "Start" button and type "Device Manager" to open a list of hardware installed on your computer. Right-click the network card and select "Properties." Click the "Driver" tab and click "Upgrade" to install the latest drivers for the card.

4
Power cycle the router. If the router freezes or stops responding, rebooting the router usually fixes the issue. After you reboot the router, attempt to log in to the MSN service or ping the router again to verify that it is working.

5
Replace the network card. If the network card or router is faulty, you must replace them. You can isolate the issue by logging in to the MSN service from another computer on the network. If you log in successfully, the problem stems from the computer's network card. If you cannot gain access even on another computer, the problem stems from the router.
