How to Make Pony Ears With Felt

Save

As October rolls around, your child may ask to be a pony for Halloween. Your child may also need pony ears if he's going to participate in a school play featuring animals or she may request a pastel-colored pony theme for her birthday party. Fortunately, it's fairly easy to craft pony ears right at home on a headband or sweatshirt hood using two different colors of felt, with very little sewing, if any, required. Choose two colors of felt for the pony ears because each pony ear is comprised of a main color and a smaller contrasting insert.

Things You'll Need

  • Felt
  • Ruler
  • Scissors
  • Permanent marker or pen
  • Craft glue or double-sided fabric tape
  • Straight pins
  • Needle
  • Thread

Pony Ears On a Headband

  • Use a ruler and a permanent marker or pen to measure out two rectangles of felt that are 2 1/2 inches by 9 inches for the main part of the ear.

  • Cut the felt rectangles along the marked edges using scissors made specifically for fabrics or crafts.

  • Fold each felt rectangle in half around the top of the headband, one at a time, matching the shorter pointed edges together at the top so that they resemble pony ears.

  • Space the two rectangles about one inch apart on the headband and carefully trim away any overlapping fabric so that the sides that come together are evenly matched.

  • Glue the two sides of each felt rectangle together with craft glue or double-sided fabric tape.

  • Cut two small triangles, about 1 1/2 inches high, from the felt of the contrasting color. Trim each triangle to fit inside the front of the pony ear.

  • Attach each small contrasting felt triangle inside the front of the pony ear using craft glue or double-sided fabric tape.

Pony Ears On a Sweatshirt Hood

  • Cut two large triangles, approximately 2 1/2 inches high, in the felt color for the main part of the ear. For the insert, cut two smaller triangles that are 1 1/2 inches high.

  • Attach the smaller triangular felt insert on the front of the larger felt triangle using craft glue or double-sided fabric tape.

  • Mark the two spots where you want the pony ears to sit on top of the sweatshirt hood with a permanent marker or pen. Pin the ears to the sweatshirt hood with straight pins.

  • Sew the felt pony ears to the top of the sweatshirt hood using a needle and thread, then remove the pins. Use thread that's the same color as the pony ears and sweatshirt.
