How to Mic a Xylophone
Xylophones produce a brief, tinny sound that can easily disappear under the rest of a band or orchestra. Whether you are recording or playing live, you will probably need to mic your xylophone for it to be heard. The standard microphone for a xylophone is a flat-response condenser. This type of mic reproduces sound faithfully, so the subtle tone quality of your xylophone will carry without distorting. Most condenser mics operate by battery or wirelessly, so you won't have extra chords cluttering up your stage.

1
Set up your xylophone where you want it on the stage or in the recording studio. Leave enough room behind it on its stand to attach the mics.
-
2
Measure the xylophone and locate its center. Measure 1 foot to each side of the center, and clip a small microphone stand to the xylophone stand at each point.

-
3
Adjust the stands to 18 inches above the top of the xylophone. Fasten flat-response condenser microphones into each stand. Angle the heads toward the instrument.
-
4
Perform a sound check before you begin to play. Listen to the amplified xylophone by itself and with the rest of the band or orchestra. Adjust the levels as needed to blend it appropriately with the group.
