Instructions

    • 1

Listen to the mantle clock to see if it is off beat. If the clock sound is "tock tick tock tick," rather than "tick tock tick tock," the clock is off beat. This usually happens after moving the clock without taking the pendulum off first.

    • 2

Open the front access panel of the clock to access the pendulum. The moving part that hits the pendulum back and forth is the verge. Push the verge back into a straight position, as it is likely bent after having been moved. This will put the clock in beat.

    • 3

Check to make sure the pendulum isn't touching anything else in the clock. If it is, this could be the reason the clock stops intermittently. Ensure that the pendulum is level to ensure it doesn't hit other objects.

    • 4

Check the hands of the clock to ensure they aren't touching anything. If they are, it can cause the clock not to produce a "tick tock" sound. Unbend the clock hands to free them.

    • 5

Check the clock to see if it is wound. If it isn't, wind the clock.

    • 6

Pull the hands off the clock and replace them facing at "12." Then reset the hands to the appropriate time. This will reset a clock that is chiming on the wrong hour.

    • 7

Check the plates and gears on the inside of the clock. If there is residual oil caked on, use a clock cleaning kit and bristle brush to gently clean the components of the clock.
