How to Import & Insert Moulder Heads

Check moulder heads with calipers before importing.

Almost all production moulders are imported from either Germany or Italy. They have standardized moulders and moulder heads. Moulder heads are designed by the manufacturer to fit only their machines and whenever moulder heads are needed, they have to be imported. When the moulder head arrives, its a simple matter of removing all guards and covers from the moulder and inserting the head onto the proper shaft where it is bolted in place. The moulder head is then adjusted for cutting speed and depth after it is in place.

Instructions

  1. Importing Moulder Heads

    • 1

Check the manufacturer. For example: If your machine is a Wienig, you will need to order genuine Wienig heads.

    • 2

Remove one of the heads. Check the diameter of the shaft on the machine. Use a pair of calipers to check the size of the shaft, and write it down.

    • 3

Check online for the manufacture's website. When you find it, compare the head and profile configurations and sizes to the available options offered by the manufacturer. Place your order for the moulder head.

    Inserting Moulder Heads

    • 4

Remove the dust cover from the moulder on the shaft where you want to insert the head. Remove the bolt and washers protruding from the end of the shaft with the moulder wrench that comes with the machine when it was purchased.

    • 5

Insert the moulding head onto the shaft of the moulder. The hole in the center of the moulding head fits snugly over the shaft. The knife edge should be facing the infeed rollers of the moulder.

    • 6

Slide the moulder head all the way onto the shaft until it stops. Replace the bolt and washers on the end of the shaft. Tighten the bolt with the wrench. Spin the moulder head lightly with your fingers to make sure it isn't making contact with any other parts of the moulder. Replace the dust cover.

Tips & Warnings

  • Moulding heads can come with or without knives. When importing moulder heads, be sure to purchase them with knifes intact.

  • Moulder operations should only be attempted by experienced moulder operators, or in the presence of experienced operators. Always wear safety glasses when operating molders. Moulder heads can be very heavy. Always use two hands when handling, and be careful of the razor sharp knives. Gloves are also advised.
