How to Bridge Vs. Share a PS3 Network

If you have an older PS3 that doesn't have built-in wireless networking and it is too far away from your router to run a cable, you can network it with your home network in one of two ways. The first is by setting up a network bridge, and the second is by setting up Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) on your computer. Either way will get your PS3 networked, but network bridging requires the use of a special bridging device and an existing wireless network, while network sharing requires a computer set up near your PS3.

Things You'll Need

  • Ethernet cable
  • Ethernet bridge device (if setting up a network bridge)
  • Existing wireless network (if setting up a network bridge)
  • Additional Ethernet network port on your computer (if setting up ICS)

Instructions

  1. Set Up a Network Bridge

    • 1

Place your Ethernet bridge device somewhere close to your PS3 console and plug your bridge device into a power outlet.

    • 2

Insert an Ethernet cable into your PS3’s Ethernet network port and insert the other end into your bridge device’s Ethernet port. Turn your bridge device on.

    • 3

Connect your bridge device to your existing wireless network by following the directions in the Connection section of the bridge device's documentation. The exact details vary among different bridge device manufacturers. In all cases, you will need to enter your existing network’s security key (if you have one set up). Once your bridge device is connected to the network, your PS3 will automatically become networked with your home network via the Ethernet network bridge method.

    Set up Internet Connection Sharing

    • 4

Insert an Ethernet cable into your PS3’s Ethernet port and insert the other end into your computer’s additional Ethernet port.

    • 5

Go to the Windows "Start" menu on your computer. Click “Control Panel,” type “adapter” into the search tool, hit “Enter” and then click “View network connections” in the Network and Sharing Center section of the page.

    • 6

Right-click the network connection that provides your computer with network/Internet access (it can be wired or wireless) and select “Properties” from the context menu. Confirm the operation, if prompted.

    • 7

Open the “Sharing” tab and check the check box labeled “Allow other network users to connect through this computer’s Internet connection.” Click “OK” to save your settings and close the dialog box. Your PS3 is now networked with your home network via the Internet Connection Sharing method.
