How to Make Party Trays for Kids

How to Make Party Trays for Kids thumbnail
Create party trays children can enjoy for the duration of the event.

When deciding on food options for a children's party or event, a party tray is always a safe bet. You can load numerous foods onto a single tray, and can also create theme trays, such as snack platters featuring healthy food options in fun shapes, and dessert trays heaping with miniature desserts. Fill trays with colorful foods to attract children's eyes; presenting healthy foods in fun arrangements will also make children more eager to try the snacks. Using smaller versions of assorted desserts is also ideal for children's small hands.

Instructions

  1. Healthy Snack Tray

    • 1

Cut up assorted fruits into fun shapes, such as hearts and stars. Fruit ideas can include watermelon, honeydew, cantaloupe, strawberries and pineapples. Use cookie cutters to make shapes out of the cantaloupe, watermelon, honeydew and pineapple. Create heart shapes by removing the greenery from the strawberries and cutting them in half.

    • 2

Cut assorted cheeses into square shapes. Use wooden skewers to create fruit and cheese kabobs. Make the same pattern of fruit and cheese on each skewer or use a different pattern per skewer. Incorporate other fruits that do not lend themselves to easy cutting, such as raspberries, blackberries and blueberries. Whatever patterns you decide on, alternate between fruit and cheese pieces on each skewer.

    • 3

Arrange the skewers on a clean platter, and use colorful linens to catch dripping fruit juice.

    Dessert Tray

    • 4

Bake or buy miniature desserts, such as mini cupcakes, brownies, cookies and pies. Add colored sprinkles to cupcakes and brownies, and bake or purchase cookies that feature candy-coated chocolates or other treats. Use whipped cream on the pies. Leave a few cream-free to create more options if desired.

    • 5

Arrange the desserts by type on a colorful dessert platter. Fill a fourth of the platter with the mini cupcakes, another fourth with piles of cookies, and the remaining half with the pies and brownies.

    • 6

Fill in any gaps around the baked goods with wrapped candies, pieces of chocolate such as caramel-filled chocolates, and any other small treats you can incorporate into the tray.

Tips & Warnings

  • Add small toys to your dessert tray option if desired; make sure there is enough for each child at the party.

  • Write funny sayings on small pieces of paper, glue them to toothpicks and stick them into a few of the cupcakes and pies. Cut out goofy pictures and glue them to toothpicks as another option.
