How to Iron Rayon Shirts

How to Iron Rayon Shirts thumbnail
Ironing rayon with the proper temperature is critical.

Rayon shirts are ironed much like other shirts, but low heat is required to prevent scorching. Although rayon is a man-made fabric, its fibers are extracted from wood pulp. As a result, the fabric feels and looks like natural fibers such as cotton, linen and silk, but it burns much faster. Because rayon is soft, durable and easily dyed to bright colors, it is often used to make high-end clothing, including evening wear, flowing gowns and attractive shirts for men and women. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Set the iron to low heat and a light steam setting.

    • 2

Place water in the iron and allow the iron to heat up. Keep the iron away from the shirt while it is heating; otherwise, the iron may sputter and create water spots on the rayon.

    • 3

Turn the rayon shirt inside out to prevent a shiny appearance that can be caused by the heat of the iron.

    • 4

Lay one side section of the shirt on the ironing board.

    • 5

Smooth the fabric with your hand to remove large wrinkles, as wrinkles that are ironed into rayon are difficult to remove.

    • 6

Start ironing at the side seam. Move the iron in short downward strokes, working from the side seam out to the buttons and from the shoulder to the bottom of the hem. Always iron with the grain of the fabric to prevent stretching.

    • 7

Repeat Step 6 with the remaining side section. Allow each section to cool slightly before moving on to the next section.

    • 8

Move the shirt carefully so that its back is on the ironing board. Iron the back using short downward motions, from the bottom of the collar to the hem. Move the shirt when necessary to iron the entire back.

    • 9

Fold the collar down neatly. Iron the collar.

    • 10

Lay one sleeve flat on the ironing board. Don't button the cuff, but be sure that the button holes and buttons are neatly lined up.

    • 11

Start at the shoulder, ironing in short strokes from the shoulder to the bottom of the cuff. Flip the sleeve and iron the other side.

    • 12

Repeat Step 11 with the other sleeve.

    • 13

Hang the rayon shirt immediately to keep it wrinkle-free.
