How to Make a Recycled Fleece Hooded Scarf
Fleece fabric works especially well for simple scarves and hats, because it doesn't fray or require hemming. Recycle an old fleece blanket into a winter accessory that is both a hood and a scarf. The hood portion is attached to the center of the scarf and provides a stylish way to keep both your ears and neck warm. The project requires only one piece of fleece, a few simple cuts and a single seam, making it suitable for a quick gift even beginners can create.
Things You'll Need

- Measuring tape
- Fabric marker

1
Cut a 60-by-24-inch piece from the fleece fabric. Fold the fabric in half lengthwise, with right sides together.
-
2
Measure 11 inches down from the top of the fabric, measuring along the fold. Mark the fleece with a fabric marker at the 11-inch mark.
-
-
3
Cut along the fold, beginning at the opposite end from which you measured and marked. Cut until you reach the 11 inch mark. The cut makes two separate tails of fleece, which is the scarf portion of the project. The portion above the 11 inch mark is the hood.
-
4
Cut the top corner of the hood portion of the fleece in a slight curve, cutting from the folded edge to the top. Make the curve so it comes in approximately 1 1/2 inches from the corner.
-
5
Machine stitch along the top of the hood, 1/4 inch in from the edge. Continue the stitching along the curve, until you you reach the folded section at the back of the hood. Begin and end the stitches with a backstitch, so the thread doesn't pull loose.
-
6
Cut 2-inch long slits, 1/2 inch apart, along the bottom edge of each scarf portion of the fleece to create the fringe.
-
7
Turn the hood right-side out. Wear the scarf by placing the hood on your head and wrapping the scarf ends around your neck.
