DIY MIG Contactor

Metal inert gas (MIG) welders and their interchangeable electrodes enable welders to tackle tasks with a high level of precision. If your MIG welder needs repair or maintenance, it is highly recommended that only seasoned welding technicians carry out upkeep on the machine. However, there are a few maintenance tasks that can be handled by entry level technicians. And, if you simply need to replace a dull contactor in your welder's gun assembly, you'll find replacing the contactor to be a brief "do-it-yourself" task.

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug your welder's power cable before you replace the gun's contactor. Unscrew the gas nozzle assembly from the head of the gun to reveal the diffuser. If your gas nozzle includes an insulator, leave it inside of the nozzle.

    • 2

Unscrew the old contactor and remove it from the diffuser. Ensure that the replacement contactor is appropriately sized for the wire currently installed in your welder. Reference the side of the old contactor for its size information.

    • 3

Screw the base of the replacement contactor into the diffuser. Screw the base of the gas nozzle onto the diffuser and contactor combo.
