How to Make a Foundation Double Crochet
Traditionally, a crochet project begins with a length of chain stitches. However, a length of chains does not provide an accurate gauge for the final product, and it can become tedious or confusing to keep continuous count of the stitches in subsequent rows. Using a foundation stitch to begin a crochet project will provide a more accurate gauge and establish a set number of stitches. A foundation double crochet incorporates the initial chains and the double crochet into a single stitch, from which rows are added with double crochet stitches.
Instructions
-
The Slip-Stitch Chain
-
1
Wrap the end of the yarn over the main strand to make a loop.
-
2
Fold loop backwards over main strand so it bisects the loop.
-
-
3
Insert the hook through the loop and under the main strand. Tighten loop to make a slipknot.
-
4
Wrap yarn over the hook and pull this through the loop to make a slip stitch. Repeat twice to make the three-loop chain that will begin the foundation.
The Foundation
-
5
Wrap the yarn over the hook.
-
6
Insert the hook through the first chain, which is the bottom slip stitch.
-
7
Wrap the yarn over the hook and pull through the first chain.
-
8
Wrap the yarn over the hook, and pull through one loop.
-
9
Wrap the yarn over the hook, and pull through two loops.
-

Wrap the yarn over the hook, and pull through two loops.
Continue the Stitch
-
11
Wrap the yarn over the hook.
-
12
Insert the hook below the two loops at the opposite end, which is the left side of the crochet if you are working the stitch right-handed. These loops will be on the right side if you are working the stitch left-handed.
-
13
Wrap the yarn over the hook and pull through once.
-
14
Wrap the yarn over the hook, and pull through one loop.
-
15
Wrap the yarn over the hook, and pull through two loops.
-
16
Wrap the yarn over the hook, and pull through two loops.
-
17
Repeat Steps 1 through 6 for as many stitches as you need in the foundation double crochet. All subsequent rows will use the double crochet.
