How to Adapt a Super Takumar Lens to Canon EOS
Canon's line of Digital Single Lens Reflex (DSLR) still and video cameras includes the EOS 7D and 5D models. These cameras use Canon's Electro-Optical System (EOS) and the EF system for mounting. EF is one of a wide range of alternative lens mounting systems. One such system, M42, uses a screw thread to mount lenses. Pentax popularized the M42 lens mount, and the Super Takumar lens is also a product of Pentax. Super Takumar lenses weren't designed for modern DSLR cameras, but adapting it is possible if you choose the right lens. You'll need an adapter to convert from the M42 mount of a Super Takumar lens to Canon's EF mount.

1
Determine the exact model of Super Takumar lens that you have available or plan to acquire. All camera lenses are labeled around the rim of the lens, where a filter or lens cap is placed. You need to know the length of the lens and the smallest supported f-stop.
-
2
Check the compatibility charts at Panorama Planet for the characteristics of your lens. At the time of publication, the only Pentax Super Takumar lenses that are supported by an EOS camera are the 24 mm, 35 mm and 50 mm (F1.4) lenses.

If your Super Takumar is listed as compatible with an EOS, screw the M42 adapter to the bottom of the lens.
-
4
Line up the dots and only twist the mounting ring to connect the Super Takumar lens and adapter to your Canon EOS camera at the EL mount. The EL mount is a bayonet-type adapter.

Tips & Warnings
If you have never seen it, the information printed on a Super Takumar lens may appear to be in code. For example, "1 : 3.5 / 28" refers to a 28 mm f3.5 lens.
If you attempt to mount an unsupported lens to your camera, you will encounter images that are out of focus or contain vignetting in the corners.
