1
Measure the width along the inner front part of the cabinet using a measuring tape. Cut a piece of plywood to this measurement using a handsaw. You will screw this plywood blocking into the oak countertop for added support.
-
2
Drill two slightly angled pilot holes through each end of the plywood using a hand drill fitted with a one-eighth-inch bit. Space the holes one-half inch away from the edge of the plywood sheet.

3
Lay the plywood blocking piece along the front section of the top of the cabinet, ensuring it fits snugly within the cabinet’s width. If required, trim excess length with a handsaw. Insert 1 1/2-inch deck screws through the pilot holes along the ends of the plywood that penetrate the cabinet and secure them together.
-
4
Insert a 1/2-inch paddle bit into the drill. Drill a hole through the center of the plywood, creating one hole through each cabinet.
-
5
Lay mitered wood pieces together if covering an L- or U-shaped cabinet. Apply a thin bead of wood glue over the corresponding mitered edges and press together so they form a secure bond. Wipe excess glue that seeps out through the joint with a wet rag. Allow the glue to dry thoroughly. Center and lower the oak countertop over the cabinet.
-
6
Insert a deck screw and washer into each hole from the inside of the cabinet, extending it into the oak countertop. Ensure the screw is three-quarters of an inch shorter than the thickness of the oak block so it does not protrude through the top. Tighten the screw with a wrench until it snugly pulls the oak counter to the cabinet.
-
7
Spread mineral oil over the surface of the oak countertop. Allow the oil to soak into the oak surface for several minutes before wiping any excess off with a clean cloth. Oil the oak countertop once every month to maintain its appearance and condition.
