How to Convert 35 Millimeter Slides to Discs
Digitizing your old collection of 35mm slides is a great way to preserve your most precious pastimes. Most flatbed scanners and all-in-one printers, however, are not capable of converting slides to digital format. To complete the process, use a 35mm film and slide scanner. A variety of companies, including ION, Wolverine and Canon, offer slide scanners for less than $100. After scanning and saving the slides to your PC, you can transfer them to CD or DVD in a few hassle-free steps.

1
Create a new folder on your desktop, which will be helpful in organizing the slides you scan to your PC. To create a new folder, right-click an empty space on your desktop screen, highlight the “New” option and select “Folder.” Enter a name for the folder and click “Enter.”
-
2
Connect the slide scanner to your PC by using the USB cable that was included with the device. Turn on the slide scanner.

-
3
Open the film holder. Place the 35mm slide into the holder, and then close the holder.
-
4
Insert the loaded film holder into the thin slot on the slide scanner.
-
5
Open the slide scanning software that was included on the installation disc.
-
6
Click the “Scan” or “Snapshot” button on the main menu. Depending on the software you choose, the name of the scanning option will differ. When the process is complete, a preview of the images will be displayed on the screen.
-
7
Select the first image and click the “Save” or “Transfer” button. The option to save the slide scans will differ depending on the software. Enter a file name for the digital image. Select the desktop folder you created as the destination folder, and then click “Save.” Repeat this step for each slide you scanned to your PC.
-

Close the scanning software when you are finished scanning and saving each slide to your computer.
Copy Images to Disc
-
9
Insert a blank DVD into your computer’s disc drive. While you can also transfer the digital images to a CD, a DVD can hold seven times as many pictures as a CD. After inserting the disc into your PC’s disc drive, the “AutoPlay” dialog box will appear.
-
10
Select the “Burn files to disc using Windows Explorer” option.
-
11
Enter a name for the photo disc in the “Disc Title” field. Select your preferred disc formatting option, such as “Live File System” or “Mastered,” and click “Next.” The “Live File System” option allows you to add more pictures to the disc at a later date. If you want to view the photo disc on a device such as a DVD player, use the “Mastered” option. After selecting an option, the “Windows Explorer” window will open.
-
12
Open the desktop folder that contains the slide scans.
-
13
Select each digital image you want to burn to disc. To select all of the images in the folder, press “CTRL + A” on your keyboard.
-
