How to Change a Genuine Garage Door Sensor
The downward force of a garage door is capable of causing significant damage to cars, toys or tools left in its path. Two sensors attached to the garage's door frame prevent this from happening by sending an invisible infra-red beam across the opening; if something breaks the beam, the door reverses or stays open. Faulty sensors sometimes cause the door to stay open despite the way being clear. The procedure for installing a replacement sensor is largely the same between manufacturers and models. Unplug the garage door opening unit. The power must be switched off during this process.

Follow the path of the wire from the back of the defective sensor to the motor head attached to the ceiling. The wires are held in place by a spring-loaded button; push the button down and pull the wires from the sockets.

Attach the wires at the end of the new sensor in the same configuration as the old sensor. Push the button above the socket inward to open the connection, insert the wires and release the button.

Remove the defective sensor from its bracket on the door frame by undoing the wing nut. Roll up the sensor with its wire and place it to one side. Attach the new sensor using the wing nut.

Adjust the new sensor on its mount, making sure it points directly at the sensor on the opposite side of the door frame. Misaligned sensors often cause trouble opening and closing the door.
