How to Make a Folding-Up Hang Glider

Using a 6-inch square piece of origami paper and a few folds, you can make a fold-up hang glider in a few minutes. Unlike a paper airplane that you would toss into the air, origami hang glider glide gracefully to the floor when you release them from above your head. Secure the wings with plastic tape and affix a paper clip to the nose for a faster glide.

Instructions

    • 1

Fold your origami paper in half horizontally. Crease and unfold. Fold in half a second time vertically. Crease and unfold.

    • 2

Fold the left side of the origami paper toward the center and crease. Fold the upper left-hand corner toward the center line and crease. Repeat with the lower left-hand corner.

    • 3

Unfold the two corner folds you’ve just made.

    • 4

Refold the top-left corner down toward the center, then fold the point of this corner up toward the edge. Refold the bottom-left corner fold up toward the center, then fold the point of this corner down toward the edge.

    • 5

Fold the point made by the two folds toward the center, then fold the two loose side flaps up.

    • 6

Fold the glider in half, leaving a small angle between the two wings. To improve your glider's flight, tape a small piece of plastic tape to the wings. To make your glider faster, affix a paper clip to its nose.

    • 7

Hold your glider above your head at 45-degree angle and let it slide off your fingers. Watch as it slides gracefully from your fingers and glides toward the floor.
