How to Go From a Texturizer to a Straight Perm

The transition between a texturized perm and a straight perm is a drastic one. When you undergo a texturized perm, you strip proteins from your hair, while during a straight perm you infuse your hair with proteins and oils. While it is not normally advisable to go from a texturized perm to a straight perm, you can still achieve this outcome by taking certain reasonable precautions to ensure that you protect the health of your hair. Instructions

    • 1

Mix four egg yolks and 1/4 cup olive oil and apply to your hair three to four times in the week prior to getting your straight perm. This will invigorate your hair with necessary proteins and oils that your hair lost from your initial texturizing perm. Do this at least two days before your perm to ensure that any excess oils are washed out and will not work against the chemicals in the straightening system.

    • 2

Purchase a no-lye hair straightening kit to minimize potential damage to your hair that may result from excessive acidity.

    • 3

Wash and condition your hair as normal the morning you intend to perm your hair, taking care to rinse.

    • 4

Put petroleum jelly around your hairline before you apply any chemicals. This will eliminate irritation caused by the chemicals' harshness.

    • 5

Section your hair into four parts to ensure equal and adequate coverage. Parts one and two should comprise the right and left front hemispheres; parts three and four should comprise the right and left back hemispheres.

    • 6

Take the application brush and apply chemicals to the roots of parts three and four of your hair since your hair is thickest in the back and will require more time to process. Brush downward to the ends of your hair. Make sure to saturate all parts thoroughly.

    • 7

Start applying chemicals to parts one and two, beginning at the roots of your parting and moving toward the ends of the hair.

    • 8

Cover your hair with the plastic cap provided in your kit. Use a supplemental plastic bag if necessary.

    • 9

Allow your hair to sit with the plastic cap on for the amount of time specified by the directions included in your kit.

    • 10

      Wash your hair out thoroughly.
