How to Record & Render in MAME

MAME, or Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator, is a free download for your PC that emulates the internal workings of over 1,000 arcade machines. In addition to providing an authentic arcade experience, MAME also includes many additional features, such as the ability to record gameplay or to change the rendering modes used to display the in-game graphics. As MAME is run from a command prompt, it can be difficult to activate each feature without knowing the proper commands or the files to configure.

Instructions

  1. Record Gameplay

    • 1

Open a command prompt and navigate to your MAME directory.

    • 2

Type the following command into the command prompt to enable recording in MAME:

      Mame <game> –record <filename>.inp

Replace <game> with the name of the game you wish to run. <Filename> is your desired name for the recorded movie with the file type you want to save it as listed after. There are several file types you can record in: .inp, .avi, .mng and .wav.

    • 3

Press "Enter" to launch MAME. The recording starts immediately when MAME is launched. To stop recording, quit MAME. Your recorded videos are located in the "inp" folder in your "MAME" directory.

    Change Rendering

    • 4

Double-click the MAME.ini file located in your "MAME" directory.

    • 5

Scroll down to the section titled "Windows Video Options." Located underneath that is "Video" and a set of initials to the right of it. By changing the set of initials you can change the rendering type that MAME uses.

    • 6

Delete the current entry next to "Video" and enter one of the three available rendering options. From least powerful to most powerful, these are gdi, ddraw and d3d which stand for GDI, DirectDraw and Direct3D.

    • 7

Select "File" and "Save" to save your changes. When MAME is launched, it now uses the rendering option you specified in the MAME.ini file.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you do not have a MAME.ini file, you can create one from the command prompt. Enter the following phrase at the command prompt in the MAME directory:

  • Mame -cc

  • Press "Enter." The MAME.ini file is now created and available in your MAME directory.
