Avoid paying too much for designer fringe jeans.

Wearing torn jeans is a style that goes in and out of fashion with every generation. Following this trend, designer frayed jeans can get fairly expensive. A cheap way to enjoy the fashion of fringed jeans is to make your own. All you need is a pair of old jeans and a few basic materials. Start out with used jeans and experiment with different looks and designs until you are satisfied.

Instructions

    • 1

Select a pair of jeans that are a bit too large for you. The leg length should extend slightly past your ankles to ensure the jeans still fit after you remove the bottom cuff.

    • 2

Stand in front of a mirror with your jeans on. If you are going to add rips to your fringed jeans, visualize where you want the holes. Mark the areas you want to tear using a pen.

    • 3

Mark the bottom cuff of your jeans near the ankle area. Using a pen, encircle the entire cuff of the jeans.

    • 4

Remove the jeans. Place them on a flat table. Cut off the bottom cuffs of your jeans using scissors. Use the marks you made with the pen as a guide to help keep your cuts straight.

    • 5

Cut small slits in the areas where you want the rips. Use small slits as these slits will widen to large holes during the washing process. Rub the area surrounding the slits with a cheese grater or sandpaper. Continue rubbing until the denim is worn down to the strings.

    • 6

Machine wash and dry your jeans. The washing process will help fringe the bottom cuff of your jeans and fray the rips you created.

    • 7

Inspect your jeans for satisfaction. If you want a more frayed look to the bottom cuff on your jeans, comb the fringed area using a hair comb. Machine wash and dry your jeans again.

Tips & Warnings

  • Zig-zag your cuff line when you are cutting to add a pattern to your fringed jeans.

  • Add a little bleach to your washing machine for a bleach-dyed, retro design.
