How to Crochet a Crescent Moon Cap

Add a crescent moon shape to a crocheted hat.

A handmade hat is a charming accessory to keep in your own closet or give to a friend as a gift. If you have a talent for crocheting, consider making a sweet hat with a crescent moon motif. The moon shape is added using a contrasting color from the yarn used for the main part of the hat. The moon shape is cast on to the stitching of the hat, creating a charming accent for a warm hat.

Instructions

    • 1

Create a circle stitch to start the crown portion of the cap. Rotate around the original stitch, making a coil shape.

    • 2

Stop about four rows into the circle piece of the crown, alternating colors to begin the crescent moon shape. Cast on the new color, a yellow or white shade, using a slipknot stitch to attach the new color to the old.

    • 3

Create the shape of a thumbnail moon, using the stitches to complete the shape.

    • 4

Cast on new stitching with the original color to complete the circle crown. Coil around until the circle piece is about the shape of the crown of the head.

    • 5

Make the rim of the hat by casting on stitching underneath the outer rim of the crown. Wrap the stitches around, making rows of stitches under the crown. The rim should be about 8 inches long all around for an adult hat.

    • 6

Cast off the final stitch of the rim so that the hat won't unravel.
