Find the segment of the part number containing the description of the RAM chips. This is typically the first portion of the part number, and consists of a character sequence such as "32Mx8" or "32Mx16."

Identify the density of your RAM chips with the number following the "x" in the part number. Low-density RAM is identified with an "8" after the "x," while high-density RAM is identified with a "16." So a RAM chip with a description of "32Mx8" is a low-density module, while one with a description of "32Mx16" is a high-density module.

Tips & Warnings
If you install high-density RAM in a laptop that cannot support it, you may encounter issues with your laptop's motherboard only recognizing half of the RAM. For example, if you install a 1 GB high-density RAM module in a laptop that does not support it, your laptop may only see 512 MB of that RAM, or may sometimes not recognize the RAM at all.
