How to Install a Gordon Piatt G4

Gordon-Piatt G4, commonly known as model G4 burner, is a brand of burner used in firing gas-fueled boilers manufactured by Gordon-Piatt Energy Group. The device is designed to fire natural gas or liquefied petroleum gas. Installing the equipment requires expertise. Because the burner is assembled at the factory, confirm that all connections are intact before installing it to your boiler. Local codes and regulations should also be considered before beginning your project.

Instructions

    • 1

Assemble the burner parts to your workbench. Cross-check your burner parts -- the blower motor, gas valves, gas pilot regulator, burner combustion head, gas pilot ignition and airflow safety switch -- with the material list in your instruction manual to confirm that all the parts are provided in the kit.

    • 2

Check for damages and loose components that might have resulted from improper handling or storage during shipment. Report all the damaged or missing parts to the manufacturer for immediate replacement.

    • 3

Consult your gas utility company to establish your state's regulations regarding installation of burners to the boilers. Inquire about Local Codes or the Standards for the Installation of Domestic Gas Conversion Burners and the National Fuel gas code. Fulfill them as required. If they require hiring a certified technician to install some of the parts or carry out inspection, then you will have to abide by this.

    • 4

Select a room that has adequate supply of fresh air for your boiler installation. This will ensure proper combustion. For example, the American National Standard ANSI specifies that buildings with permanent openings should have a total free air of not less than 1 square inch per 5,000 British thermal units. The selected area should also be able to allow servicing and maintenance of the burner.

    • 5

Hire a technician from a qualified service agency to install a boiler, if it was not already installed in place. Have him inspect the boiler to ensure that it operates as required. Also, have him inspect your Gordon-Piatt G4 burner and how it will interface with the boiler system.

    • 6

Clean the heat transfer surfaces of your boiler in preparation for connection of the Gordon-Piatt G4 burner. Also, ensure that the pipes of your boiler system are properly insulated to ensure efficiency.

    • 7

Check that the flue pipe, draft hood, double acting barometric damper and vent of your Gordon-Piatt G4 burner are not smaller than recommended by your boiler’s manufacturer. If you use the existing flue pipe, consider cleaning the soot and other deposits.

    • 8

Verify the gas requirement for your model G4 burner. Have a burner start-up specialist or qualified service agency check that the maximum inlet pressure to gas train does not exceed 10.5 ice water content measurement for natural gas, or 13 ice water content measurements for LP gas. Natural gas minimum supply should be 5.5 and 8.0 ice water content for liquefied petroleum gas.

    • 9

Run the wiring. Consult your Local Code requirements for specification on wiring before you consider making any connection. Have the technician run the wiring as required. Refer to the burner’s schematic for information on wiring to ensure that everything is set as required.

    • 10

Connect burner electric power from a separate fused disconnect switch installed in the boiler room. Ensure that power to the burner is 120 volts.

    • 11

Mount the burner gasket. Connect a sheet or rope gasket to the burner mounting flange. This will prevent leakage or combustion gases from the boiler room.

    • 12

Mount the burner. Position the burner to the front plate of the boiler and tighten it with nuts on the mounting studs or clamps to secure a rigid installation. Support the burner housing to the floor to complete installation.
