How to Draw in AutoCad Without Putting in the Dimensions

Utilize the "Sketch" command in AutoCAD to draw on your canvas without being required to enter dimensions. One of AutoCAD's most popular features is the ability to draw objects with specific dimensions that can easily be scaled to any size, but you can encounter situations where you need to create a freehand sketch within your design. You can enter sketch mode at any time, draw your object without any dimensions, and then return to the default AutoCAD mode that will prompt you to enter dimensions as you draw on the canvas.

Instructions

    • 1

      Launch AutoCAD.

    • 2

Click inside the "Command" bar at the bottom of the window.

    • 3

Type "Sketch," press "Enter," and then press "Enter" again.

    • 4

Click your mouse anywhere on the canvas and drag your mouse to draw on the canvas without putting in any dimensions. Clicking your mouse again will lift the pen from the canvas and allow you to move your mouse without drawing. Click the mouse a third time to begin drawing again.

    • 5

Click inside the "Command" bar at the bottom of the window when you are finished drawing.

    • 6

Type "Exit," and then press "Enter" to exit sketch mode.

Tips & Warnings

  • Click the "Eraser" button in the toolbar at the top of the window to erase a section of your drawing. Click on your canvas and drag the eraser selection window to select the segment of your drawing that you want to erase. Press "Enter" to erase the selected segment.
