Edging for an Outdoor Awning

Edging for an Outdoor Awning thumbnail
The finish on your awning can add charm to your outdoor decor.

An awning provides shade and shelter to your outdoor patio, deck, storefront or window. Additionally, awnings provide exterior decoration to your home or business, with an opportunity to dress up the outdoor structure while bringing some of your indoor style outside. An awning can be retractable, free-stranding, simple or elegant, but without an edging it may feel cold and structural. Pick the right edging and the whole project can feel warmer and more inviting, adding style and personality to your outside area. Does this Spark an idea?

Choose from a straight cut, scalloped edge, zig-zag pattern or other edging of your choice. Cut the material's edges. Sew on edge finishing material.

  • Create edging at the time you install your original awning for ease and color matching.

  • Add tassles, fringe or other decorative items before hanging the awning, if desired.

  • Sewing skills are very helpful for this project.

  • Instead of fixed awnings, consider using portable canopies or create a simple canvas canopy from sail material, wooden poles and cording.

  • Installing an awning is not recommended for novices without any carpentry experience.

  • Two people or more are required to install an awning.
