An anniversary party might call for semiformal dress.

Knowing how to dress can be the most stressful part of an evening occasion. You don't want to be the only one in formal attire, but the last thing you want to do is to show up underdressed. If you have been invited to an evening semiformal affair, know how to decode the invitation and dress appropriately. Whether it is a wedding, an anniversary party or any other celebration, look and feel your best with an outfit that will only be noticed for its style.

Instructions

    • 1

Do not wear a tuxedo to a semiformal event if you are a man. Wear a suit and tie, or go with dress pants, a tie and a blazer for an afternoon event.

    • 2

Wear a dress or business suit if you are a woman. Go with a dress that comes to the knees or lower, but not as low as the ground. Avoid ball gowns and long gloves, which are considered formal wear. Alternatively, wear a skirt and blouse, or dress pants with a blouse and jacket.

    • 3

Wear dress shoes to a semiformal event. Women do not have to wear heels, but the shoes must be nice enough to go with a dress. If you're a man, wear dress shoes that you could wear with any suit and tie. Avoid sneakers.

    • 4

Don jewelry that is not too flashy. Avoid dangling earrings and elaborate necklaces with long chains. Wear stud earrings and a simple necklace, such as a pendant on a chain, or no necklace at all. Men can wear cufflinks, but avoid bright colors. Make all jewelry match your outfit as much as possible.

Carry a purse that is black or that matches your outfit. If you wear a scarf, go with one that matches what you are wearing. Both men and women can wear belts with semiformal attire. Choose one that does not stand out.
