How to Knit a Simple Fingerless Glove thumbnail
Use your needles to make simple fingerless gloves for yourself or a friend.

For a quick and economical knitting project, try making a pair of fingerless gloves. Also known as hand warmers, fingerless gloves are ideal for beginners as they are knit on straight needles and do not require any complicated shaping techniques. Made with a stretchy wrist to accommodate all sizes, they can be worn over regular gloves for an extra layer of warmth in the winter.

Instructions

    • 1

Cast on 28 stitches using the smaller 5 millimeter needles.

    • 2

Knit a one-by-one rib pattern by alternating between one knit stitch and one purl stitch.

    • 3

Continue working in the one-by-one rib pattern for a further nine rows.

    • 4

Change to larger needles and begin knitting the main body of the glove in stockinette stitch, where you alternate between one knit row and one purl row.

    • 5

Continue knitting in stockinette stitch for approximately 2 inches, depending on the length of your hand. On a knit row, make the thumb hole by knitting the first 24 stitches, bind off two stitches and then knit the last two stitches.

    • 6

Finish the thumb hole by purling the first two stitches. Cast on two stitches and purl to the end of the row.

    • 7

Continue knitting in stockinette stitch until you reach the desired length for your glove. Bind off all stitches, leaving a 10-inch yarn tail.

    • 8

Thread the yarn tail through the tapestry needle and fold the glove in half lengthways. Sew the two sides together by weaving the needle in and out of the stitches of the two edges. Weave the excess yarn tail into the stitches of the glove until it becomes invisible to the eye.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can also knit the wrist in a two-by-two rib pattern by alternating between two knit stitches and two purl stitches.

  • Brighten up your gloves by working the wrist section and main body in contrasting colors.
