Tips and Ideas for Hanging Party Decorations From a Vaulted Ceiling

Decorate a vaulted ceiling for a special party atmosphere.

Many homes have vaulted ceilings, which offer a dramatic look and open, spacious atmosphere. Although attractive, vaulted ceilings create challenges when decorating for a party. It’s hard to hang decorations from the surface without harming the paint. And if you can figure out how to affix the decorations to the ceiling, they will probably be too high to be readily admired by guests. But with a little ingenuity, you can overcome these obstacles to decorate your vaulted ceiling in a memorable way.

• Helium balloons
• Light-reflective stars
• Suction cups with hooks
• Removable-adhesive hooks
• Cellophane paper
• Sample-sized-teen cosmetics
• Red and pink construction paper
• Glitter spray paint
• Tape
• Black marker

Instructions

Helium-Filled Balloons

1. 

   Release hellium-filled balloons to decorate a vaulted ceiling.

   Buy one helium-filled balloon for each party guest. Tie a 5-foot string to the end of each balloon. Release the balloons up to the ceiling to decorate your ceiling without any adhesive.

2. 

   Give a "Sweet 16" party a grown-up flare with grab bags suspended from balloons.

   Use bright-red balloons for a "Sweet 16" party. Make a grab bag by wrapping one sample-size teen-appropriate cosmetic, such as lip gloss, with colorful cellophane paper. Tie the grab bag to the end of each balloon. Each girl gets her own party balloon with a party favor, which she may trade throughout the party.

   Hang Valentine's cards from balloons for a Valentine's Day party.

   Tie valentines to the end of the balloons for a Valentine's Day party. Address one valentine to each guest and have them take home the balloons as a party memento at the end of the evening.

4. 

   Make a child's birthday party special with balloon decorations.

   To make a child's birthday party special, write a number on each balloon with a black marker. When each guest arrives, tell him that at the end of the night he should select one balloon from the ceiling. If his number matches a number you have drawn, he wins a special prize. Each child gets to keep his balloon as a memento, and one child gets a prize along with the balloon.

Use Fishing Line

1. Suspend a line of hooks across the length of the vaulted ceiling using suction cups with hooks or removable-adhesive hooks. Attach a length of fishing line to the hooks to create one long line onto which party decorations can be hung. Attach each individual party decoration to a separate length of fishing line. Each separate decoration is then attached to the line running across the ceiling. The decorations will look like they are floating from the ceiling, as guests will not be able to see the fishing line. Vary the length of the lines attached to each decoration to create a random floating effect.

2. 

   Suspend hearts for a singles' party.

   Cut red-and-pink hearts out of colored construction paper, or buy plastic hearts from a party-supply store for a singles' party. Tape each decoration onto its own line, which you can then attach to the ceiling.

3. 

   String pumpkins for a Halloween party.

   Decorate different-size orange Styrofoam balls as pumpkins for a Halloween party by drawing a face and mouth on each with a black marker. Thread the fishing line through the top of each ball with a needle. Tie each decoration to the fishing line running along the length of the ceiling.

4. 

   Floating snowflakes create a winter-party atmosphere.

   Make snowflakes for a winter-themed party out of paper, or buy them ready-made from a party-supply store. Spray each snowflake with glitter to add sparkle. Attach each to its own string, which you can then attach to the ceiling.

5. 

   Use glowing stars for a night party.

   Buy glow-in-the-dark stars from a hobby or craft shop and attach a string to each with tape. Hang each to the string on the ceiling for a night party.

Tips & Warnings

• Make sure the package of hooks you buy says the adhesive or suction will not damage your ceiling paint. Never hang anything from your ceiling that is heavy enough to harm a guest should it fall.
