How to Fit a Shower Pan Liner Around the Outside Corners
A shower pan liner consists of a thin, flexible membrane that sits under the shower pan and waterproofs the base of the shower. Installers insert the membrane prior to installing the drain and extend it up the walls so water does not cause damage. The interior corners of the membrane are simply folded and secured into place. However, the outer corners along the shower curb require cutting. After cutting the liner, installers fit preformed corner covers over them to seal the edges against water.
Step 1
Position the shower pan liner into the base of the shower and attach the back corners to the wall. Install the drain per the manufacturer’s instructions.
Step 2
Smooth the shower liner toward the front edge of the shower using your hands. Press it firmly into the corners where it meets the short vertical shower curb. Insert a utility knife blade at the base of the corner and run it up the wall of the shower curb to create a slit. Repeat the process on the opposite side of the shower pan.
Step 3
Wrap the resulting flap over the top of the shower curb and down along the outside edge until it touches the bathroom floor. Secure the flap in place by inserting concrete nails along the bottom every 3 to 4 inches.
Step 4
Open a package of preformed dam corners, using PVC corners for polyvinyl chloride liners and CPE corners for chlorinated polyethylene liners. Open up the dams until they form the shape of the corner. The dams are prefolded to form the proper shape easily.
Step 5
Open a tube of PVC bonding adhesive or CPE adhesive, depending on the material the liner consists of. Spread a 1/8-inch layer over the back of each dam, using a paint brush.
Step 6
Place the dam at the top of the shower curb where the outside corner is located and align the center fold with the ridge on the corner. Smooth it down into the shower using your hands and then smooth the top portion over the curb to secure the bonding adhesive.
Step 7
Repeat the process to install another dam on the other outside corner of the shower pan.
