Instructions

  1. Sewing a Comb to a Bridal Veil

    • 1

Using the needle and thread, baste the edges of the tulle or lace in a running stitch along the top of the veil, placing the stitches approximately a quarter of an inch or a third of an inch apart, depending on the thickness of the material.

    • 2

Pull the basted stitches gently so that the thread acts as a drawstring and the edges are gathered together. Adjust them to fit the width of the hair comb at its top edge. Hold the gathered edges together and tie off the thread on one side. Draw the needle through to the other side and tie off this opposite end. Make sure that both ends are tied off securely so the gathered edge will keep its shape.

    • 3

Place the gathered edge on a work surface, with the underside of the veil on top. Place the top edge of the comb against the gathered edge, with the teeth pointing away from you and the underside of the comb on top, facing you, curving upward like a seesaw.

    • 4

Using a needle and white thread, whip stitch the gathered edge to the top of the comb, sewing between the comb's teeth. Make several stitches in each area to attach the comb more securely. Tie off several times and cut off the remaining thread with the scissors.

    • 5

Thread a large-eye fabric or darning needle with a length of narrow white ribbon, and whip stitch in the same area along the top of the comb edge, working the ribbon between the teeth. This covers up the thread stitches and gives the comb a finished look. Tie off and cut the ribbon, leaving a small tail that you can hide by weaving underneath the closest stitches.

Tips & Warnings

  • Once the comb is stitched onto the veil, the edge can be decorated with fabric flowers. These can be secured by stitching the stems around the top of the comb, or, if the stems are very fine, threading them carefully around the comb's teeth. Jewels and sequins can also be added to the top of the comb, using regular fabric glue or a hot glue gun.

  • Choose a comb that will attach securely to your wedding hairstyle. If necessary, consult a hairstylist. A large, wide-tooth comb should only be used if you're planning to add a substantial topping of silk flowers or beads and jewelry to the top of the comb; otherwise, a fine-tooth comb is preferable, because it holds the hair more securely, is easier to attach to the underpart of the veil, and is more unobtrusive.
