How to Airbrush a Fondant Cake to Give It a Finished Look
Fondant gives a cake a finished look, and is often used to make wedding cakes and larger birthday cakes look more professional. Airbrush a fondant-covered cake to give it a sheen or color, making it look more finished. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Smooth the fondant. The fondant should adhere smoothly to the surface of the cake and there should not be any bumps or bubbles underneath the surface. Smooth any fingerprints or seams that are visible in the fondant.
-
2
Mix the color of ink you want to use to color or coat the fondant. If you are covering a large surface, mix enough ink to cover the entire cake as it is hard to mix more ink to exactly match the first batch.

3
Add shimmer dust to the ink mixture. If you only want the cake to shimmer, but do not wish to add color, mix the shimmer dust to clear water and use it in the airbrush. Shake the dust/ink mixture to make sure the dust is suspended in the ink before pouring it into the ink well of the airbrush.
-
4
Test the spray from the airbrush on a piece of paper before using it on the cake. This will show you the color of your ink and how much color will be applied to the cake at once.
-
5
Spray the entire surface of the cake, fully coating the fondant. Layer several coats of ink on the cake until you achieve the desired color and appearance.
-
6
Flush the airbrush with clear water several times to remove all ink and shimmer dust from the nozzle and ink well. Blow air through the airbrush to ensure the airbrush is clean and dry before storing it.

Tips & Warnings
Apply the airbrushed color in layers for an even coverage on the entire cake. This will make the finish of the airbrushing look more even and professional, and keep you from having some spots that are darker than others.
Use the ink/shimmer dust mixture quickly after mixing it. If you don't, the dust will settle and could clog the airbrush.
