Toilet Gurgles When Taking a Shower

Toilet Gurgles When Taking a Shower thumbnail
A gurgling toilet is caused by a partial blockage.

A gurgling noise in your toilet when the shower is in use means you have a partial clog in the drain line. In most homes, the shower drains into the sink drain which in turn drains into the toilet drain before it makes its way into the home's main drain stack. If there is a partial clog, the water pushes air through the line and causes the gurgling noise you hear in the toilet. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Pour 2 gallons of bleach down the shower drain in the evening and do not flush the toilet throughout the night. The bleach will break down the partial blockage, which usually consists of hair and soap scum.

    • 2

Empty a large stew pot filled with boiling water down the shower drain in the morning. The boiling water will combine with the bleach and help further break down the clog.

    • 3

Stop the shower drain and fill the tub or shower pan with water. Release the stop and allow the water to flush the drain. Repeat the flushing process several times to thoroughly flush out the drain.

    • 4

Flush sinks and shower drains every week with a large volume of water as you did in the previous step. This will help prevent clogs from forming in the drain pipes. Pour a half gallon of bleach into drains every month to further mitigate the formation of clogs.
