Instructions

    • 1

Purchase a kimono on specialty websites such as VintageKimono.com or Ichiroya.com. More affordable, modern kimonos are also available online (see Resources). Make your own kimono using a silk bathrobe with a floral design or purchase a solid-colored one. Attach embellishments, using a glue gun. Purchase a kimono pattern and material to sew your kimono.

    • 2

Buy a pair of wooden sandals, known as “geta,” at an Asian-run shoe shop found in city Chinatowns or Japantowns or at a mall in a region where there is a dense Asian population. Alternatively, purchase a pair of sandals at online stores such as Yukata Kimono Market Saukra or Jun Gifts (see Resources).

    • 3

Design your hair into an elaborate style, using pictures of geishas from library books or Japanese-culture websites. Style it into any sort of “up” hairstyle to achieve a geisha look. Adorn your hair with a decorative comb, Japanese ornaments, flowers or hair sticks.

    • 4

Cover your entire face and neck with white face paint. Leave a "peek-a-boo" area uncovered on the nape of the neck, free of any paint. Darken your eyebrows with a black brow pencil. Add black eyeliner. Paint your lips with bright-red lipstick.
