How to Insert a Pre-Bonded Keratin Extension

Separate sections of hair using a pointed comb.

To apply traditional fusion extensions, a stylist must dip each set of extension strands individually into the bonding agent before attaching it to the client's head. Pre-bonded keratin extensions allow you to skip this step in what can be a very time-consuming process. Each piece is thoroughly pre-coated with keratin, a protein that bonds to the natural proteins in human hair under heat, so there is no risk of using too little. Pre-bonded extensions also ensure that all the extension pieces match--you do not have to estimate the number of strands to put in each piece. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Separate the bottom 1/2-inch of the client's hair from the rest of her hair using a sectioning comb. Clip the bulk of the hair out of the way so you have easy access to the bottom section.

    • 2

Use your fingers to separate an anchor piece of hair from the middle of the bottom section. It should be about the same size as an extension piece. Slide or clip a sectioning disk around the root of the anchor piece and twist the strands gently to tighten them together.

    • 3

Align an extension piece with the underside of the anchor piece, about 1/4-inch from the sectioning disk. Press the extension into the natural hair using a fusing tool. Apply firm pressure for three seconds to melt the keratin.

    • 4

Pinch and roll the fused section of hair between your fingers to evenly distribute the bonding glue and firmly affix the extension into the hair.

    • 5

Repeat the process with all the hair you are lengthening.

    • 6

Style the hair and extensions normally.

Tips & Warnings

  • Apply pre-bonded keratin extensions to thoroughly clean, dry hair, without any conditioner or other products in it.

  • This process can take up to 10 hours to complete, depending on the length and thickness of the client's hair.

  • Do not wash hair for 24 hours after applying extensions.

  • When styling hair with heat-bonded extensions, keep hot-styling tools such as curling irons, flat irons and crimping irons away from the keratin bonds.

  • Do not attempt to insert pre-bonded keratin extensions into your own hair. This process requires experience and finesse, so have a professional insert your extensions.
